			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong><div class="two_third">FRECKLETON STREET BRIDGE, BLACKBURN</strong></p>
<p>Won in a limited design competition this landmark bridge will carry the planned Town Centre Orbital Route over the main Bolton – Blackburn railway line.<br />
The new bridge will consist of a single span 78m steel bowstring arch with a steel/concrete composite deck. Four tubular sectioned arch members are arranged in pairs and connected at their crowns for stability. The footways are separated from the carriageway and supported on cantilevers from the main arch ties.</p>

<p>The bridge stretches from Tsing Yi Island to Ma Wan Island and has a fully suspended main span of 1.377km supported by two portal braced reinforced concrete towers 206 m high. It is the longest bridge in the world to carry both a road and rail span.</p>
<p>The 40 metre wide hybrid truss/box bridge deck has two three lane carriageways on its upper level for road traffic and on the lower (internal) deck there is two rail tracks and two protected emergency lanes for road traffic in typhoon conditions.</p>
<p>The deck is suspended from two main cables which were formed by aerial spinning and are 1.1 m in diameter, bigger than any other cable spun to date. They pass over the main towers and are secured into massive concrete anchorages at both ends. At the top of each tower the cables are retained in steel saddles designed and machined to precisely accommodate the cable geometry and transfer the loading into the concrete towers. The deck is supported at 18 metre intervals by suspenders connected to the main cables. Utilisation of the cables for deck support at the Tying Yi side span is precluded by the local geometry of the deck, where its width and depth vary to accommodate the slip roads.</p>
<p>Key elements of the design are those relating to shipping and the typhoon season. High navigational clearance to Hong Kong harbour means the main span stands 79.45 metres above mean high water. The bridge can also withstand wind speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour.</p>

<p>Yee Associates has been involved with this project from concept right through to completion. Initially Yee Associates acted as the aesthetic advisor to the Highways Agency, presenting the project to the RFAC and then Public Enquiry. Yee Associates then assisted Carillion PLC during the DBFO Tender, detailed design &amp; construction stages.<br />
The bridge sits in a very flat landscape and can be seen up to 30km away, additionally the bridge passes over a SSSI requiring special aesthetic, environmental and ecological design measures.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong><div class="two_third">RIVER USK CROSSING, NEWPORT, SOUTH WALES</strong></p>
<p>Newport’s new 190m steel arch bridge carries the A4042/A455 Southern Distributor Road over the River Usk connecting Duffryn on the west side of Newport and the M4(J24) Coldra Roundabout.</p>
<p>Significantly this landmark bridge is located between the Transporter Bridge (one of only two of its type still in operation) and the George Street Bridge (the first cable stayed highway bridge in the UK). Accordingly a steel arch was developed in order to add to the City’s family of different bridge types and celebrate Newport’s industrial steel heritage.</p>
